Q. 간단한 자기소개 부탁드립니다.

Could you please briefly introduce yourself?

안녕하세요. 홍대에서 아트토이 작업을 하고 있는 '토베이'라고 합니다. 

Hello, I am Tobey, working on art toys in Hongdae. 

Q.  '토베이(Tobey)'라는 이름으로 활동하고 계세요. 어떤 뜻이 담겨 있을까요? 

You go by the name 'Tobey.' What does it mean to you? 

Obey는 '순종하다', '따르다'라는 의미를 가진 단어입니다. 여기에 십자가 모양의 소문자 ‘t’를 앞에 넣어 t-Obey로 표현하면, '십자가 앞에서 순종하다'라는 의미를 담고 있습니다.
"Obey" means "to follow" or "to submit." By placing a lowercase "t" in front to form "t-Obey," I made it to mean "submitting before the cross." 

Q. 어떻게 아트토이 작가의 길을 걷게 되셨나요? 

How did you start your journey as an art toy creator? 

제 20대 후반은 취업과 사업 실패를 반복하며 제 자신에게 실망하고 힘든 시기였습니다. 그때 문득 제 삶을 돌아보며 어린 시절부터 캐릭터 그리기를 좋아했던 기억이 떠올랐습니다. 살아오면서 나만의 캐릭터를 만든다는 것은 저에게 큰 기쁨이자 활력소였습니다. 그러던 중 아트토이 장르를 접하게 되었고, 제가 만든 캐릭터를 실제 조형으로 구현할 수 있다는 매력에 빠지게 되었습니다. 힘든 상황 속에서 시작된 이 작업이 작가의 길로 저를 이끌게 될 줄은 상상도 못했습니다.
I went through a difficult time in my late twenties, repeatedly facing obstacles one after another - looking for a job, starting businesses, and so on. During that time, I looked back on my life and remembered how much I enjoyed drawing characters as a child. Creating my own characters has always been a source of joy and energy for me. Then, I discovered the genre of art toys, and I was drawn to the idea of physically bringing my characters to life. I never imagined that this passion that stemmed from such a challenging time would eventually lead me to become an artist. 

Q. 아트토이 제작에 대한 작가님만의 철학이 있으시다면요? 

Do you have a personal philosophy when it comes to creating art toys? 

되도록이면 희망찬 주제를 작품으로 만들려고 합니다. 절망으로 한 주제의 작품이라던가, 외로움 같은 우울한 주제는 피하는 게 제 작품 활동의 철학입니다.  
I try to bring on uplifting subjects in my work. I avoid topics like despair or loneliness, as my philosophy is to steer clear of dark, depressing matters in my art. 

Q. the 'J', the 'P', FRED 등 다양한 캐릭터를 제작하셨는데, 캐릭터 제작에 영감을 준 인물이 있을까요? 

You've created various characters like the "J," the 'P', and FRED. Were there any particular people or figures who inspired you to create these characters? 

‘P’는 제 자신의 경험과 감정에서 많은 영감을 받은 캐릭터입니다. 특히 제가 행복했던 순간들이나 다양한 상황 속에서 느꼈던 감정들을 함축적으로 표현한 작품입니다. 한편, FRED는 80~90년대 흑인 문화에서 큰 영감을 받았습니다. 그 당시의 흑인들이 보여주었던 자유로운 에너지와 거칠면서도 자신을 강하게 표현하는 모습이 인상 깊었고, 이러한 특성을 캐릭터로 풀어내고자 했습니다. 이 두 캐릭터는 각기 다른 영감에서 출발했지만, 모두가 진정한 자아를 표현하는 데 중점을 둔 점에서 공통점을 가집니다.
"P" was heavily inspired by my own experiences and emotions, reflecting on moments of happiness and the various feelings of different situations. On the other hand, FRED mainly references Black culture in the '80s and '90s. I was deeply impressed by the free, bold, strong spirit of the Black people from that era, and I wanted to capture those traits in this character. While these two characters come from different inspirations, they share a commonality of focusing on true self-identity. 

Q. 작가님의 작업에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것은 무엇인가요?

What gave you the biggest influence on your artwork? 

제 작품에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 요소는 감정과 추억입니다. 살아오면서 겪은 다양한 감정들이 제 작업에 추상적인 표현으로 나타나기도 하고, 구체적으로 표현되기도 합니다. 과거에 느끼고 경험했던 것을 소재로 작품을 만들다 보니, 그 시절을 떠올리게 하는 아이템들을 재미있는 요소로 함께 표현하게 됩니다. 이 과정에서 추억의 아이템들이 캐릭터의 특징이나 스토리에 자연스럽게 녹아들어 더 많은 재미는 주는 것 같습니다.
The biggest impact on my work comes from emotions and memories. The various feelings I've had throughout my life often appear in my work, sometimes abstractly and other times more concretely. As I create pieces based on the past, I tend to incorporate nostalgic aspects as a wit. These naturally blend into the character’s features or story, adding an extra fun layer to the work. 

Q. 사람들에게 어떤 아티스트로 기억되고 싶으신가요? 

What kind of artist do you want to be remembered as? 

따뜻한 작품을 만드는 작가로 기억되고 싶어요. 제 작품을 보고 추억을 느끼고 옛 시절의 기억을 떠올리게 만들어주는 사람으로요.
I want people to remember me as an artist who creates warm, heartfelt works—someone whose pieces evoke nostalgic memories. 

Q. 홍대와 안양에 스튜디오가 있으신데, 작업 공간에 대해서 설명해 주시겠어요? 

You have studios in both Hongdae and Anyang - tell us more about those spaces. 

홍대 작업실에는 작품의 전반적인 디자인 작업을 주로 하고 있고요. 오프라인 클래스도 함께 진행하고 있고, 같이 작업하는 동료도 많아서 에너지를 받는 공간입니다. 안양 작업실에서는 모델링 이후의 과정인 피지컬 작업을 주로 하고 있어요. 독립된 공간이라서 집중이 잘 되는 장점이 있습니다.
In my Hongdae studio, I mainly work on the overall design. I also hold offline classes there, so I get a lot of energy, let alone from other creatives who share the space. In my Anyang studio, I focus on the physical aspects of the work, like post-modeling processes. It’s a more secluded space, so it helps me concentrate better. 

Q. 아트토이 작가 지망생들을 가르치고 계세요. 그분들에게 조언을 해주신다면요? 

You're also a teacher to aspiring art toy creators; what advice would you give to them? 

당장 최고의 작품을 만드는 것도 좋지만 여러 가지를 많이 보여주는 것도 중요하다고 생각해요. 다작을 해서 자기만의 브랜딩을 먼저 하는것이 중요해요. 그러다 보면 나의 모든 능력을 쏟아부어서 만들어야 하는 작품을 해야 할 때가 오거든요. 그러면 그때 최고의 작품을 만들면 됩니다.
Creating your best work at the moment is great, but it's also important to show a spectrum of your creativity. Producing a lot of work and building your own brand should come first. There will come a moment for a masterpiece over time, into which you'll need to pour all your heart and soul. That's when you aim to do your best work. 

Q. 세븐에잇언더와의 협업은 어떠셨나요? 

How was your collaboration with SEVEN EIGHT UNDER? 

작품 활동을 처음 시작하면서 꿈꿔왔던 신발 브랜드와의 협업을 드디어 이루게 되어 저에게 영광스러운 순간이었습니다. 세븐에잇언더의 디자인이 아트토이로 표현하기에 너무 적절해서 협업하는데 즐거웠습니다.
It was an honor to finally collaborate with the sneakers brand I dreamed of working with since the beginning of my career. SEVEN EIGHT UNDER perfectly suits the art toy genre, so it was such an enjoyable experience. 

Q. 이번 작품을 통해 전하고 싶은 메시지가 있으실까요? 

Is there a message you wish to convey through this project? 

작품 자체에서 전하고 싶은 메시지보다는 다소 늦은 나이에 이 일을 시작한 저를 보시고 다른 분들도 새로운 도전에 용기를 가졌으면 좋겠습니다.
Rather than conveying a specific message through the work itself, I hope to encourage everyone who wants to take on a new challenge, looking at me starting a career this late. 

Q. 이번 작품의 하이라이트를 몇 가지 짚어주신다면요? 

If you were to highlight a few key aspects of this project, what would they be? 

저의 대표 캐릭터인 the’P’ 가 세븐에잇언더의 신발을 신고 있는데, 디테일적인 요소들을 재미있게 표현했습니다. My signature character, the 'P,' is wearing SEVEN EIGHT UNDER shoes in this project, layered with fun details to discover. 

Q. 작가님의 최종적인 목표는 무엇인가요? 

What is your ultimate goal as an artist? 

성경에 나오는 노아의 방주를 실 사이즈로 만드는 게 목표입니다. 저 혼자만 만드는 것이 아닌 작업 활동을 하면서 만난 소중한 인연들과 함께 만들고 싶어요. 그중 세븐에잇언더도 포함되어 있습니다 ㅎㅎ
I want to build a life-sized Noah's Ark, like the one in the Bible. I don’t want to do it alone, but rather with the meaningful people I’ve met through my creative journey. SEVEN EIGHT UNDER is definitely one of those collaborators!
